To me the most alluring part of vintage watch collecting is finding watches with unique patina. The ā€œChocolate Subā€ is one of the most fascinating and sought after examples of aging from this era of vintage Rolex.

As is the case with most patina: the aging from a black to brown dial is most likely a manufacturing flaw, luckily a beautiful one. Similar to faded bezel inserts and aging tritium, there are many degrees of patina in these ā€œchocolateā€ dials. From mostly black with very slightly brown and all the way to the other end of the spectrum, a very complete and deep brown such as this dial.
