To me the most alluring part of vintage watch collecting is finding watches with unique patina. The āChocolate Subā is one of the most fascinating and sought after examples of aging from this era of vintage Rolex.
As is the case with most patina: the aging from a black to brown dial is most likely a manufacturing flaw, luckily a beautiful one. Similar to faded bezel inserts and aging tritium, there are many degrees of patina in these āchocolateā dials. From mostly black with very slightly brown and all the way to the other end of the spectrum, a very complete and deep brown such as this dial.
